Scout, from University of California, is an online education program that is available for middle and high school students, teachers, schools, and school districts. UC Scout offers 'A-G' approved college preparatory and College Board-approved Advanced Placement courses online.
UC Scout's mission is to provide high-quality A-G and AP curricula and courses for students in need, with an emphasis on advancing the academic success of California's educationally underserved students.
The incumbent reports to the Communications Program Manager and supports Instructional Design. UC Scout consists of roughly 70 full-time and part-time employees. UC Scout is a branch of UC Santa Cruz and the University of California.
The UC Scout team is a remote team that holds occasional meetings on location from its home location in Santa Clara, CA.
Under supervision of the Communications Program Manager, the Graphic Artist will apply expertise in conceptualizing, designing and implementing original designs to support outreach and instructional goals for UC Scout. The Graphic Artist will create original design elements for a variety of platforms, including but not limited to social media, website, email, print publications, learning management systems (Canvas), and video elements. The Graphic Artist will appropriately and persuasively present UC Scout to a variety of audiences in alignment with brand guidelines.
The Graphic Artist will collaborate with a variety of internal teams within UC Scout to support recruitment efforts, as well as support students participating in online education. They will create original designs that clearly and persuasively demonstrate UC Scout's brand and values, in compliance with best practices in design and in accordance with ADA requirements.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $31.30 - $47.34/ Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. JOB DUTIES
50% - Marketing and Communications
Using design principles and guidelines, creates visual text and imagery using a range of computer software to develop the overall layout and production of a range of visual assets, including but not limited to digital advertising, print publications, social media posts, reports, etc. Creates original, interesting and persuasive visuals in compliance with brand guidelines and accessibility requirements in collaboration with Outreach team, and in alignment with strategic goals.
40% - Instructional Design Support
Develops design elements to support online education, engagement, and inclusion. Graphic projects range in scope and complexity, from advanced and collaborative to basic and somewhat independent. Design and maintain visual/media assets to be deployed in our learning management system (Canvas) in partnership with instructional designers.
5% - Video Production
Supports Video Production team with graphical needs as needed.
5% - Collaboration
Works in collaboration with internal teams within UC Scout, including but not limited to marketing and communications, Instructional Design and video production. Maintains technical knowledge to apply to a variety of design projects to assist with marketing and student learning experiences, and works iteratively to ensure the highest quality result.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma, two years of art training, and three years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
Thorough understanding of technical language.
Thorough understanding of applicable rules and regulations for web communications.
Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
Thorough interpersonal communication skills.
Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
Thorough skills using design tools including the full Adobe Suite
Ability to critique work accurately and professionally and to accept edits and changes from multiple parties.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Experience in developing and implementing graphic assets for a variety of platforms, preferably for an education-focused program.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
Must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
