A Global Communications analyst to work as part of a team of global sector specialists (GSS) and a high performing equity team delivering consistent, high alpha to a range of clients.
We're a global investment manager. We help institutions, intermediaries and individuals around the world invest money to meet their goals, fulfil their ambitions, and prepare for the future.
We have around 5,000 people on six continents. And we've been around for over 200 years, but keep adapting as society and technology changes. What doesn't change is our commitment to helping our clients, and society, prosper.
We moved into our new HQ in the City of London in 2018, where this team is based. We're close to our clients, in the heart of the UK's financial centre. We offer flexible working appropriate for both our clients and people.
Our Global & International Equities team manage over $70bn of institutional, intermediary and retail mandates. The four Portfolio Managers (PM) work with eleven Global Sector Specialists (GSS), several of whom run specialist portfolios, too. The team currently works with a high degree of flexibility between remote working and our London office.
What you'll do
Our GSS are responsible for discovering and presenting the best global ideas consistent with our investment philosophy of unanticipated growth. This involves developing clear investment theses for both long term winners and shorter term, opportunistic trades. Clear, powerful research notes along with relevant modelling and valuation work are expected and discussed widely. GSS participate actively in Portfolio Construction meetings, guiding PMs to their strongest ideas, sell decisions and ongoing monitoring / discussion of active investment theses.
Our GSS benefit from being able to lean strongly on Schroders' 90+ regional analysts, often developing mutually beneficial relationships through an exchange of local / global viewpoints.
The Communications sector is marketed by rapid change, fast innovation and important disruption risks. It includes several heterogeneous subsectors such as media & entertainment (including digital advertising) and telecommunications (cable & telephony).
The knowledge, experience and qualifications you need
- Upper Second Class (or international equivalent) undergraduate degree or better - previous investment experience (not restricted to buyside) and a proven track record of adding alpha as an equity investor - experience analysing a range of business models and industry groups - understanding and experience applying a range of valuation techniques - strong modelling skills, incorporating P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow statements - willingness to make high conviction calls and work closely with the PM's to shape portfolios accordingly - an ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team - strong written and verbal communication
The knowledge, experience and qualifications that will help
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong independence of thought as well as an ability to think creatively and pragmatically from an investment perspective. The Communications sector evolves rapidly so a willingness to consider disruptive models and new ideas while retaining a firm hand on basic economic principles is key.
Experience with Communications stocks in all major global regions (including US and / or Pan- Asian) would be highly desirable.
What you'll be like
Our team culture is open and collaborative with a relatively flat structure. Our next GSS should be happy developing strong relationships with PM's, other GSS and local analysts alike. An openness to new ideas, techniques and different points of view has proven very successful in the past.
