Saint Mary’s Hall seeks an innovative and visionary Director of Communications to lead its robust communications program as a leader in the Office of Community Engagement. The Director is responsible for overseeing all communication, strategic marketing, branding, and public relations and developing communication strategies to advance the School’s mission. Working across campus, the Director will develop and execute annual and long-term plans to convey key messages in line with the mission and vision of the School. They will strengthen relationships with all constituencies by sharing the School’s voice and a clear value proposition. The Director is a crucial leader on campus, reports to the Assistant Head of School for Advancement, and works closely with the Head of School, Division Heads, Department Chairs, Admission, Athletics, Fine Arts, parents, and all members of the SMH community to ensure messaging reflects the school vision and brand.
The Director manages a three-person communications team, responsible for a wide range of print and digital material produced throughout the School community. The Director is a data-driven storyteller who captures the voice of school leadership and the School through verbal and written communication. They work collaboratively to support departments critical to the success of the school, including Advancement, Alumni Relations, Events, Athletics, Admission, Fine Arts, and other internal clients.
Develop and implement a short and long-term strategy to strengthen the communication efforts of the School and tell the School’s story
Work closely with the colleagues in the Office of Community Engagement, school leadership, and all departments on campus to build and strengthen relationships and support for the School
Write exceptionally, edit meticulously, and manage the production process for all projects and various mediums
Manage the communication team to build capacity and work collaboratively to accomplish all identified goals effectively
Maintain and enhance media relations to help tell the School’s story and increase awareness in the broader community
Develop and implement a social media strategy that is exciting and relevant and works collaboratively with colleagues across campus
Work in collaboration with the video production team to create videos for Advancement and Admission to highlight the School
Manage the Crisis Response Plan for the School, including crisis communications and training
Produce, manage, guide, and collaborate on the following: The Shield (biannual magazine); parent, alumni, and community newsletters; school news; Admission collateral; the Donor Impact Report; the school website, including oversight of SEO/PPC; alumni relations collateral; fundraising materials; print and digital advertising; and varied internal and external communications
Work closely with Parent Volunteers to support parent engagement efforts as communication needs arise
Manage and maintain the School’s brand integrity and awareness
Remain connected to peer school institutions and current on Independent School best practices
Represent SMH in an official capacity as needed and requested
Support activities, initiatives, and events sponsored by the Office of Community Engagement as needed
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or a relevant field (required)
Five or more years of relevant experience in an independent school or similar setting
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills and editing ability (required)
Strong experience with communication strategy and brand management
A well-organized, results-oriented mindset with a high energy level and a strong sense of urgency
An expert storyteller through all forms of media: written, digital, and verbal
An artistic eye and the ability to capture engaging and dynamic photography and proficiency as a designer with a strong familiarity of the Adobe Suite, design tools, and other business tools, including Microsoft Office products
A strong understanding of how to use digital communication as an effective platform for engaging and communicating, including website content management, email communications, and social media
Expertise with Finalsite (preferred) or other school website partners (required)
Knowledge of public relations procedures, techniques, and methods, including working with the media, including media buying
A student-centered, collaborative, and transparent leader who is accessible to students, parents, colleagues, and other key stakeholders and is adept at building relationships
A leader with extraordinarily high expectations of her/himself and the ability to inspire and motivate others

Dynamic New Leadership
Len Miller joined Saint Mary’s Hall as the 25th Head of School in July of 2020. Len comes to San Antonio after a 25-year career in independent schools. He served previously at some of our nation’s top schools, including The Hill School, The Lawrenceville School, and The Shipley School. His tenure has been hallmarked by a deep commitment to the quality of the academic program, the student experience, and the long-term sustainability and growth of the institution. He has been at the forefront of developing innovative academic programs and recruiting and retaining dynamic teachers. Robust, intentional student wellness programs are the result of his collaborative leadership.
Len’s forward-thinking efforts in strategic planning, enrollment, advancement, and fiscal matters have underpinned the overall strength and quality of the schools he has served. As a leader, he strives to empower his leadership team to build programs, effect change, and make significant and meaningful impacts on the students, faculty, staff, and School culture. Len is committed to educating the whole student with a deep focus on connection and belonging among the student body.
