The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in Arlington, VA, a professional scientific society, is recruiting a Content Manager. The AAPS Content Manager is the editor, writer, project manager, and strategist for AAPS Newsmagazine, the quarterly print and monthly online membership magazine. The Content Manager will deliver quality scientific and career-related content each month and be experienced in the printing production workflow. The Content Manager will have experience in content acquisition and content promotion, and will be prepared to repurpose content through other AAPS channels such as AAPS Communities and Twitter. Additionally, the Content Manager will work closely with AAPS’ Business Development team to ensure the magazine supports AAPS’ partners. The Content Manager will be integral to the magazine’s online presence, including posting content, reporting on analytics, making data-driven decisions, and setting strategy to support AAPS’ goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Manage all content in AAPS Newsmagazine (online monthly and in print quarterly);
Set strategy for content to support AAPS, in particular membership and business development;
Develop editorial calendar;
Coordinate, write, or acquire editorial content, including from scientists, freelancers, and staff;
Proofread and copyedit content submitted by scientists, freelancers, staff, and others, to comply with the AAPS Style Guide;
Manage proofing process;
Coordinate graphics for all content, digital and in print;
Coordinate print and digital advertisements with advertising agency and other staff;
Manage copyright transfers for all outside authors;
Manage and coordinate reprint and reuse requests;
Manage newsmagazine’s digital platform, including uploading content and graphics;
Report on newsmagazine’s website analytics and make data-driven decisions;
Actively maintain an awareness of trends and best practices in content publishing through self-guided research and participation in professional development programming;
Oversee design and layout process for print content with outside designer;
Manage production processes, including printing and mailing services;
Assist with promotion of AAPS content, including on social media;
Manage the AAPS Style Guide;
Manage newsmagazine budget with oversight by Director of Publications; and
Assist with proofreading and copyediting other AAPS content, as necessary.
Requires demonstrated effective communication skills (verbal, written, and listening) and excellent interpersonal skills at all levels of business, with a strong orientation toward providing outstanding customer service as part of a team.
Must be capable of multitasking in a busy, high-volume environment and have the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and work within deadlines.
Must be well organized, detail-oriented, and have demonstrated effective follow-up skills.
Must have firm command of written English, expertise in in-line editing and proofreading, and familiarity with well-known style guides.
Must be up-to-date on best practices in association magazine publishing and be willing to make small or large changes to processes and products.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
Experience in online publishing required.
Experience with website content management systems preferred.
Experience in website analytics preferred.
Experience in Adobe InCopy preferred.
Experience writing for social media preferred.
Understanding of copyright law and intellectual property preferred.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree required.
5 years of managerial editorial/writing experience required.
3 years of experience editing/writing scientific content required.
Majority of work is performed on a personal computer sitting at a desk for long periods of time throughout the day. Light lifting of boxes (up to 25 lbs.) and periodic travel are required.
Work is performed in a fast-paced, high-volume, detail-oriented environment. The work environment is a moderately open one with a combination of offices and cubicles. The noise level will vary from quiet to loud. Travel up to 5% is required.
