Communications Strategy and Planning
Develop, implement and revise the communications strategy.
Devise campaign concepts and strategies, working in coordination with the Advancement team and outside consultants, when appropriate.
Implement and manage all campaign communications from launch to final phase, including multiyear campaigns.
Serve as the Senior Communications Liaison and consult with colleagues and with multiple departments on project-specific communications plans and campaigns.
Provide strategy and content expertise to major Advancement publications, including the Giving Effect and the Advancement website.
Support and maintain consistent visual identity throughout work product for Advancement communications.
Develop and implement compelling and engaging content and storytelling strategies for distribution across all platforms that help the University achieve its desired goal of boosting institutional pride and understanding through increased engagement, advocacy, and philanthropic support for our mission among our students, parents, alumni and friends.
Collaborate on all fundraising proposals, donor relations, and stewardship materials throughout the University.
Direct communicators across campus on relevant projects to determine when and where story content is published, and that the content is consistent with University's strategic goals, overall University positioning and messaging, and aligned with University priorities and branding.
Collaborate with key stakeholders of University communications to plan and publish content across all platforms.
Collaborate with cross-divisional teams to maintain site standards with regard to new advancement, consistency of brand and voice, and search engine optimization.
Exercise final authority as a clearinghouse of editorial feedback from internal and external stakeholders to maintain appropriate alignment with University priorities.
Direct planning, research, writing, and packaging dynamic advancement content for publications and determine the best platforms for distribution.
Collaborate with colleagues to amplify and ensure quality and alignment with University priorities and initiatives.
Manage the production of stewardship communications, as they pertain to acknowledgement letters, in a timely and efficient manner.
Work closely with colleagues focused on alumni and student engagement to create content for digital distribution to our various donor and alumni audiences to establish ongoing engagement, gifts and stewardship, and foster mutually beneficial relationships.
Cultivate and establish collaborative working relationships with University relations colleagues, as it relates to utilizing local and regional media personnel, including reporters and editors for external media outlets.
Research, write, proofread, and edit solicitation letters, briefing documents, proposals, one pagers, reports, stewardship communications, general correspondence, presentations, volunteer resources, and other materials required to support the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors, volunteers, and prospects.
Design and format written proposals with RWU's graphic quality standards using design software.
Perform related research activities and conduct interviews with faculty, staff, alumni, students, friends, and volunteers.
Oversee details of multiple communications projects, balance priorities, and meet project deadlines and deliverables.
Research and implement emerging technologies to communicate effectively with constituents via social media.
Conduct regular web updates and improvement of the overall website content engagement and quality.
Identify audience personas and craft strategies and content to maximize the user's interaction, experience, and engagement in conjunction with colleagues and the RWU web team.
Marketing and Communications Program Development and Management
Work with senior-level colleagues and peers to communicate and promote programming for alumni and parents that is engaging, sustainable, and meets demonstrated institutional need.
Oversee the management of day-to-day project details for web-based and print communications from strategic inception to final execution.
Serve as senior contact for all internal requests for marketing; coordinate all project activities including production, testing, and optimization, set expectations and timelines, keep stakeholders informed about progress, and ensure that all marketing activities stay within budgets.
Evaluate and assess new projects based upon size, complexity, and time frame to determine availability of staff and budget resources.
Manage the coordination of multiple projects through approved external vendors, Marketing Department, and research consultants.
Provide strategic consultation and recommendations, related to marketing, to internal program staff and external partners.
Marketing Planning, Solicitation, and Major Proposals Management
Negotiate rates and recommend purchases of online, print, and broadcast and digital advertising, including obtaining contract signatures and tracking invoices and payments for all marketing purchases.
Recommend mid-year budget adjustments and annual budgets based on outcomes (web visits, inquiries) resulting from previous marketing spends.
Interpret fundraising initiative goals and conceptualize, create, and manage the production of strategic suites of campaign materials and associated communication plans to meet goals.
Plan and oversee marketing and communications, supporting capital and other special campaigns targeted at specific audiences.
Stewardship Communications Management
Develop and advise annual stewardship communications plans and manage the appropriate distribution of resources to provided successful donor stewardship initiatives, events and custom acknowledgements to support Advancement's strategic goals.
Oversee the "gift life cycle" process to advise on new efficiencies in the development of acknowledgment letters and stewardship reports, and work with staff across the division to facilitate their timely completion and dissemination to donors.
Produce stewardship communications, as requested, including research, writing, or editing of stewardship correspondence scripts, remarks, or talking points for stewardship events, videos, and tributes.
Appeal and Campaign Management
Plan and oversee marketing and communications for appeals, capital, and other campaigns targeted at specific audiences.
Serve as content editor for the Alumni & Giving websites and associated digital platforms, including current CRM, crowd funding, and social media.
Work with Deans, faculty and other academic administrators to identify stories, craft messaging and create a more dynamic "conversation" with University constituents.
Data Analytics & Metrics
Provide relevant metrics for assessing communications programs, communications audiences, and engagement profiles.
Create, implement, and evaluate annual communication plans to support overall goals and priorities.
Maintain the timing and effectiveness of all planned communication deliveries, including reviewing and monitoring analytics to assess success of communications campaigns.
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications or Non-Profit Management, or a related field.
Five to seven years of experience in a philanthropic organization, large non-profit or sale and marketing organization, and/or experience in fundraising, donor relations.
Excellent interpersonal skills, specifically the ability to work with groups and organizations, both internal and external to the University.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate concepts, ideas and information, and influence audience.
Strong project management and organizational skills, including high attention to detail and effective problem-solving skills.
Ability to function independently, working under pressure, multi-task successfully and prioritize multiple projects.
Ability to react and adapt to changing situations appropriately.
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
