As a designer with Michigan Engineering Communications & Marketing, you’ll get to work with a team of photographers, videographers, storytellers, marketers and developers to make your awesome graphic design concepts reality in one of the top ranked engineering schools in the country.
By combining your solid understanding of web design on a variety of digital platforms with the team’s expertise and world-renowned researchers’ discoveries, you will create compelling properties that will inspire the next generation of engineers, alumni and general public to imagine a better future and to serve the common good.
You will not only create cutting-edge design, but ensure all properties adhere to brand standards. While working on projects, you will be responsible for communicating with in-office stakeholders, as well as outside vendors and on-campus partners. The digital designer will not be not be required to perform any development tasks, however you must be able to “speak code.” The ideal candidate will also have a strong desire to develop graphic design skills in addition to currently held digital design capabilities.
Paramount to this position is a commitment to collaboration and teamwork. We expect you to make your voice heard and to actively participate in the creative process. You will be collaborating with our team of designers, multimedia producers, developers, content writers, and project managers, and will be encouraged to take the personal initiative to complete projects with minimal supervision.
This position reports to the Senior Creative Design Lead.
Position Functions and Duties:
Design digital and other materials - including, but not limited to, email, websites, landing pages, social graphics, with opportunities to develop skills with offline collateral
Provide existing WordPress web properties and email templates with brand refreshes and updated look and feel
Collaborate with the digital/print creative team, and production team to ensure all designs and development are on-brand
Ideate concepts and execute on new integrated marketing experiences with team members
Execute creative design with a thorough understanding of designing for popular CMSs, email design best practices, some familiarity with digital advertising and social graphics
Facilitate seamless transitions and communication between design, development and production project stages
Participate in partner meetings to ascertain requests, revisions, conceptions, and then translate into tangible design and development tasks for collaboration with team members.
Adroitly design for complex web properties that are fast-loading, easy to navigate, cross-browser compatible, mobile friendly, accessible, simple, intuitive and meet partners’ needs
Work in a well organized and on-time manner, with a strong desire to learn and always be advancing your skillset.
Under guidance from senior team members, maintain and create digital platforms (websites, social graphics, emails, landing pages) that employ digital design best practices and promote positive user experience on a variety of screens.
Work within the Communications and Marketing team and with embedded communicators to ensure consistency of online branding and messaging.
Work with the UX designer(s) to iteratively shape and evolve web properties to ensure their impact on the users is consistent with the college’s overall strategy.
Work with the college developers to refine design, interactions, and user experience.
Work with front-end developer and UX designer to create best-in-class emails, websites, landing pages and social graphics.
Explain and be an advocate for user-centered design processes, user experience, and principles in a clear and concise manner.
Stay up-to-date on cutting-edge digital design trends.
Interact with stakeholders throughout all phases of discovery, design, and development.
In some cases, it will be necessary to think about how an asset can be used, or altered, for both print and digital media to create integrated marketing experiences for our target audience.
10% Other design projects
With creative direction from senior creative design lead, and in collaboration with other print counterparts, help create original design layouts for print materials, including marketing collateral, posters, flyers, brochures, etc.
Maintain brand consistency throughout our projects.
Participate in design concept/layout with the senior creative design lead.
Assist in preparing final design files for production.
10% Project Management
Ensure seamless handoff on digital projects from design phase to development.
Present design concepts to external stakeholders.
Attend/present at communications workshops pertaining to design.
Coordinate relationship with vendors; preparing specifications and obtaining estimates for final approval.
Archive all final projects using office's guideline on server.
Bachelor’s degree in web design, digital media, Fine Arts, graphic design, communications, application design or other appropriate field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience plus 2-3 years of experience in web/digital design.
Our ideal applicant will be an expert in designing for responsive, cross-platform digital experiences and Adobe Design Suite. Applicants should have experience using prototyping tools (e.g. Marvel app, InVision, Adobe XD) and a portfolio to support experience and skills with an emphasis on branding, and marketing collateral.
Applicants should have excellent communication skills with non-technical, technical co-workers, as well as external stakeholders. They should have a proven ability to set and manage priorities (for self and for projects), handle multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines, and operate in a flexible, professional manner. Applicants should have the ability to successfully work in teams; the ability to adapt to change and thrive in an environment filled with change. They should love giving and receiving thoughtful feedback, and not be afraid to change their mind.
The ideal candidate will be proficient in all design aspects, be familiar with UX/UI best practices and theory and have an excellent understanding of current web accessibility best practices. Creativity and attention to detail are critical, as many College sites have very high visibility. They will sweat the details, but see the bigger picture. A customer service-minded approach will be used to build productive relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

Motion graphics and animation interest/capability (e.g. After Effects or similar tool)
