The Student Media Business Supervisor position is primarily responsible for recruiting, training and motivating a student advertising/underwriting sales staff to meet revenue goals for Central Washington University's student media outlets: The Observer, The Observer on-line, Pulse, Wildcat Films, Ellensburg Live, Central Newswatch and Central Communication Agency. This position is responsible for generating new revenue streams, building mutually beneficial partnerships with the business community and professional groups, and preparing students for entry-level positions within the advertising industry. The position is also responsible for managing each student media outlet's budget and human resources tasks (forecasting, billing, collections, reconciliation, record-keeping, archiving, payroll, and personnel paperwork).
Advertising & Marketing Responsibilities - The Observer, Pulse, and Wildcat Films: - Develop and implement advertising and marketing plans for the advertising and marketing products provided by student media outlets. - Analyze business trends, sales statistics and website analytics to identify sales opportunities. - Develop and maintain relationships with potential local clients by way of groups such as the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce, the Ellensburg Downtown Association, Rotary, etc. - Maintain relationships with national accounts to ensure that orders are processed as required to receive payment. - Initiate trade agreements between student media. - Prepare and assist in student sales presentations to major accounts. - Maintain quality control, and ensure compliance with all requirements for all promotional campaigns for student media. - Work with creative staff to ensure that student media campaigns meet deadlines. This includes development, design and layout of advertisements for the different media. - Prepare rate structure for broadcast, print, digital advertising/ underwriting sales and agency opportunities. - Recommend and implement rate increases as required to the Student Media Board (SMB). - Partner with other media on promotional events. - Prepare monthly and yearly goals for advertising staff. - Ameliorate advertising /underwriting errors and customer complaints. - Train staff in advertising and underwriting acceptability standards. - Coordinate sales efforts through weekly meetings.
Fiscal Responsibilities - Observer, Pulse, and Wildcat Films: - Make budget projections and adjust plans as appropriate. - Monitor income/expense and budget status reports, identify problem areas and take corrective action as needed. - Manage and execute monthly billing and collections activity for clients' purchase of advertising services. - Reconcile accounts. - Keep archive of financial records. - Manage payroll and keep appropriate documentation for all student employees. - Every four years, develop requests for Services & Activities fee funding - Annually, execute S&A reporting requirements. - Oversee and report use of PRO-Card, documenting processes and expenses according to University policy. - Oversee student travel budget. - Assist students in their funding requests to the S&A Committee and Student Academic Senate for student travel, following University policy.

Production Responsibilities - The Observer: - Supervise preparation of newspaper and magazine advertising dummies and maintain control over dummy changes resulting in late ads. - Review and correct proofs. - Work with newspaper distribution staff to ensure timely and efficient on-campus and off-campus newspaper distribution. - Work with newspaper printing vendor to ensure quality production and timely printing schedule. - Maintain archive of The Observer, both hard copy and electronic copies - Maintain archive of all student media outlets. - Keep office supplies stocked - Attend twice-quarterly monthly Student Media Board meetings

Bachelor's degree in advertising, public relations or closely related field, OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Experience working with the general public, making presentations , handling inquiries, and resolving complaints
Experience monitoring, reconciling and/or managing budgets, OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
Experience working with student media in a college setting
Working knowledge of the functions of advertising in a student publication environment.
Experience supervising and/or mentoring students
Leadership roles in advertising, marketing or public relations associations or organizations

Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary: $3,123/month with periodic increases up to $4,085/month
Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch) / 10 Month Appointment / PSE Bargaining Unit 7
Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer work station for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
